Wellbeing

We have been writing some information reports on our learning this term. Caleb was our winner last week. This is what he wrote.

Wellbeing                                                                                                       by Caleb Te Hira
Purpose: to inform
Wellbeing is about eating healthily and keeping our bodies clean. Some people think you can put junk into your body and still be healthy. Looking after your body is important because you need to have a healthy body.
Smoking
Smoking is an addictive drug that millions of people smoke. Cigarettes have over 4000 chemicals that go into your body when you smoke. If people smoke often and they try to stop, they get headaches and they don’t feel 100 percent. It’s really sad if people smoke because it can give them cancer and it can kill you.

Alcohol
Alcohol is a liquid that does serious damage to your body but mostly to your brain. When someone drinks a glass of alcohol, wine or spirits it takes an hour for your liver to break it down. When someone drinks alcohol their brain doesn’t think as good and it does not work properly. Alcohol makes you feel dizzy, light headed and lose concentration.

Eating
When you eat, make sure you are not eating too much junk food because it is not good for your body and heart. If you eat too much junk your arteries block up and give you heart attacks. Vegetables and fruit are the best options for your body to get fibre, vitamins and carbohydrate.
Drugs
Drugs can be very addictive because of what’s in them and what they are made out of. Some drugs are helpful, especially if they are medicines that a doctor has prescribed for you.

These are some of the ways you keep yourself healthy and safe. Wellbeing is about making sensible choices.

Thank you

A very big thank you to Pak n Save for letting us visit to do some research. Also, to Tina, Seymour, Patrick, Melline, Sally and Nathan for helping to supervise. Last but not least  to Sian who ran the Food for Thought programme.

Visit to Pak n Save

On Wednesday 12 March we visited Pak n Save to look at labeling on food packets and to read about the nutritional information. This was part of our learning with Sian Bolton, a nutritionist. What we found interesting was...
Daniel: Primo milk has lots of sugar in it
Jessica: There are more types of fruit than I knew about
Anita: White bread has more fat than brown bread
Caleb: Wonka chocolate has 56.6 grams of sugar
Manisha: crumpets = 0.1 grams of sugar
Brianna: I learnt  about a new fruit called 'Kiwano'
Emma: The heart foundation crackers have more sodium than normal crackers
Seyjay: There are no healthy muesli bars

Food for Thought

Today we learnt about how to read food labels on cereal boxes and which sugary drinks have the most sugar in them. Once again we had some surprises.

Weetbix was the healthiest cereal!

Ihaia: Sugary drinks are bad for your teeth
Rudolph: Energy drinks are very high in sugar
Seyjay: Cocopops are not a healthy cereal
Manaia: Energy drinks can make you drowsy as they have caffeine in them
Jessica: it is good to know what are healthy cereals and which are not
Charlotte: Now we know how to read food labels
Caleb: I didn't know that E2 is one of the most sugary drinks

Te Roopu Matau

Our class did a display for the Hall to symbolise the 'Matau'- a fish hook symbolises prosperity. Two responsible boys took the ladder over to the Hall and helped put our mural up.
