Salvation Army

Today Teana's Dad came to talk to our classroom  about the Salvation Army. He told us Where it all started and when it all started.

It all started in the west part of England where there was a lot of poverty. There were poor people living on the streets and they could only drink alchohol including very young children because alchohol was healthier than water was. The water was so bad that it could make people sick. Then he told us about this guy who lived in England and went to church and his name was William Booth.

He got all of the poor people off the streets and took them to the church and the leader of the church said "you can't bring these people here. They are crazy". So then he went off to start his own group under a tent. People started walking around with S's on their jerseys which meant saved. And it made a better environment.

All the bars started closing down and this all started in 1894. These two young men came to New Zealand - Pollard and Wright. That's how the Salvation Army started NZ.
