Buddy Day

Room 6 has signed up to be a Buddy Creator to support Buddy Day on Friday 13 November. The idea is that we create a buddy which is 'adopted' to raise awareness, start conversations and drive change about the role every adult plays in the lives of kids- from preventing child abuse to providing great environments for kids to flourish.

Sounds Amazing

Today we visited Expressions again to see the exhibition 'Sounds Amazing'. It got us wondering about how sound travels, what it travels through, how fast it travels, what vibrations are etc.
Thanks to everyone who helped and for the wonderful job 'Expressions' did in hosting us and providing a fun activity at the end. Everyone got to make a small vibrating toy using 2 iceblock sticks, tape and balloons.

Egg Float

We want to find out whether things float better in salt water or plain water.
Hypothesis
I think that the water will stay on top of the salt water but when you put the egg in it will mix.
Equipment
What we need:
  • One egg
  • Water
  • Salt
  • A tall drinking glass
Method
What we will do:
  1. Pour water into the drinking glass until it is about half full.
  2. Stir in lots of salt (about 6 tablespoons)
  3. Carefully pour in plain water until the glass is nearly full (be careful not to disturb or mix the salty water with the plain water).
  4. Gently lower the egg into the water and watch what happens.

Results
What happened:

We weren’t allowed to touch the water so we lowered the egg gently so once the egg was touching the top of the water, then I let it go.
The egg stopped going down once it got to the middle. The egg stopped where the salt water was so it looked like it was floating.
Conclusion
We found out that salt water is denser than normal water and things will float on salt water and not on normal water like how people float on the dead sea that's because of the salt so that's why the egg can float on the salt water.
Science Idea
What is the scientific reasoning?

Oscar's reason
There is water on the top and salt water at the bottom and water pushes it down and salt water pushes it up so the egg stays in between but we all failed and mixed it (:.

Manish‘s reason
Well the salt makes like a salt surface for the egg because since the salt is around the middle it is making like a surface for the egg and then water is at the the top so the egg would float around the middle and that is why it makes it float.

             Colour Changing Milk by Ethan

Aim
We want to find out…
How will different types of milk react to dish washing liquid?
Hypothesis
I think it will mix when you put dish washing liquid because I was doing the dishes and a plate had colour and when I put wash liquid in it, it blasted.
Equipment
What we need
  • 2 Dinner plates
  • Whole Milk
  • Trim Milk
  • Sticky Labels
  • Food colouring (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green)
  • Dish washing liquid
  • Cotton Buds
Method
What we will do
  1. Label the two different plates, one as standard, one as Trim
  2. Pour milk onto each plate so the bottom is completely covered. Allow the milk to settle.
  3. Gently squeeze a tiny drop of each food colouring into the middle of the plate. Make sure the drops are close together.
  4. Touch the tip of a cotton bud into the center of the colours. What happened?
  5. Put some dish washing liquid on the other end of the cotton bud.
  6. Place the soapy end into the middle of the milk and hold it there for 10 to 15 seconds. Look what happens!
  7. Add another drop of soap to the tip and try it again and at different places in the milk.
Results
When the cotton bud with the dish washing liquid touched the milk, the colours moved away quickly and then swirled around and mixed together.
The whole milk worked faster than the trim milk. It moved away but it didn’t seem to swirl as much.
Conclusion
What we found out
That soap gets rid of fat.The trim milk has less fat than the whole milk.
Science Idea
What is the scientific thinking?
The milk has fat in it and soap grabs on to it and it tries to get rid of the fat then it blasts around the milk in the plate.
The dish soap does not mix with the milk. Instead it floats on top and spreads over the surface. As it spreads, it grabs the food colouring. Soap is a "egreaser" so the molecules in it are attacking the fat in the milk, causing motion which creates the swirling of the colours.

Cameo Writing

This week in cameo writing we have focused on personification. This is when you make something that is not real, come alive!

Stuffed Toy

Stuffed toy, you lay there carelessly with not a care in the world.
I don't know how you do it with your eyes closed at day, party body at night.
You get smaller everyday with stuff oozing out of your abdomen.
Your frightening bold, black eyes staring at me every morning.
You become invisible as the other soft toys bury you.

The Pencil

Pencil you lay there like you're in bed and have no spirit to get up.
I don't know how you do it and I guess you just are on a roll with life.
You get shorter each day as people try to get the point.
You pointed because people are just using you and you're sick of it.
As you write you get sadder and sadder because your life's running out.
